Musayeroh Barrie represented Sierra Leone at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Security Week held from 20 to 22 October 2026 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The conference focused on global aviation security standards and regional cooperation. This high-level assembly gathered delegates from various member states to deliberate on the evolving landscape of civil aviation safety.
Musayeroh Barrie traveled to the event alongside the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) Director of Aviation Security. Two aviation security inspectors from Sierra Leone also accompanied the delegation to the proceedings in Kazakhstan. The group participated in sessions designed to align national security protocols with international requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. The attendees from Sierra Leone engaged with representatives from other nations to discuss the implementation of security measures during the three-day summit. These sessions involved detailed reviews of regulatory frameworks and the exchange of best practices for managing aviation security risks in a globalized environment.
Advocating for Aviation Security
Musayeroh Barrie has served as Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) for nearly four years. Her leadership at the authority follows a tenure of more than 11 years heading the aviation security department at Sierra Leone’s only international airport. This extensive experience provides her with a full understanding of both the operational challenges faced on the ground and the regulatory demands required at the national level.
Drawing on this professional background, Musayeroh Barrie emphasized the necessity of prioritizing technical infrastructure and personnel training to meet international standards. During discussions held on the sidelines of the proceedings in Astana, she articulated her position on the requirements for the industry in Sierra Leone. Musayeroh Barrie stated, "aviation security is a strategic investment in lives, national security and economic growth."
The Director General maintains that the integration of modern security protocols remains essential for maintaining connectivity between Sierra Leone and global markets. Her career trajectory, which spans over a decade of direct operational oversight at the national airport and four years of regulatory management at the SLCAA, informs her approach to current international safety mandates. By aligning national protocols with the standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization, the administration aims to improve the oversight of aviation operations. The delegation continues to review how these protocols influence the long-term development of the sector.
The presence of the Director of Aviation Security and the two aviation security inspectors at the ICAO Security Week notes the commitment of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority to maintaining a strong security posture. Through these collaborative engagements, the delegation aims to strengthen the technical capabilities of the staff responsible for monitoring and enforcing aviation safety. As the industry continues to evolve, the focus remains on ensuring that Sierra Leone remains compliant with international mandates while fostering a secure environment for passengers and cargo alike. The insights gained from the discussions in Astana are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future security policies and infrastructure investments overseen by the SLCAA.
