Sierra Leone Embarks on Railway Revival with Master Plan Assessment

Sierra Leone's Railways Development and Regulatory Authority (SLRDRA), in collaboration with Aries Engineering and Consulting Services, successfully concluded a five-day field assessment on June 30, 2026. This assessment represents key preparatory work for the development of the National Railway Master Plan, which is specifically aimed at reintroducing and revitalizing Sierra Leone’s national railway system. During the exercise, which was part of the Government’s broader efforts to revive the country’s railway network, the assessment team visited key locations including Songo, Rotifunk, Bauya Junction, Bo, Gerihun, Kenema, and Pendembu. The successful conclusion of this five-day field assessment marks a significant step forward in the nation's infrastructure development plans.

Fieldwork and Data Collection

The mission focused intently on gathering full technical, historical, and socio-economic information deemed relevant to the ambitious railway revival project. A dedicated technical team from the Sierra Leone Railways Development and Regulatory Authority (SLRDRA), working closely with experts from Aries Engineering and Consulting Services, carried out detailed inspections of former railway alignments, historical train stations, critical bridges, existing embankments, and various drainage structures. Throughout their fieldwork, engineers meticulously collected essential technical data. They also systematically documented areas significantly affected by encroachment, widespread overgrown vegetation, and erosion along the proposed railway routes. These detailed findings from the full field assessment are expected to provide key baseline information, which will be absolutely essential for the subsequent development of the National Railway Master Plan. The data will inform decisions regarding rehabilitation, new construction, and environmental mitigation measures.

Stakeholder Engagement and Community Input

The Sierra Leone Railways Development and Regulatory Authority (SLRDRA) and the Aries Engineering team engaged extensively with a wide array of local leaders and officials during the assessment period. This engagement included key interactions with Critical Chiefs, Section Chiefs, Town Chiefs, local Government officials, community elders, and various other key stakeholders. Discussions centered on the profound historical significance of the railway system to the nation's development, the present dilapidated condition of the abandoned railway infrastructure, and the public's overwhelming expectations for the proposed restoration project. Community leaders overwhelmingly welcomed the Government’s initiative to revive the railway system, expressing strong support for the project. During these vital engagements, stakeholders also detailed the numerous challenges their communities have encountered since railway operations ceased, specifically noting the burden of high transportation costs and the limitations of restricted market access that have impacted local economies.

Vision for Railway Restoration

The assessment forms an integral part of the Government of Sierra Leone's broader initiative to revive the nation's railway network, aiming for a full overhaul and modernization. Participants in the assessment expressed considerable optimism that the restoration of the railway system would lead to a significant reduction in transportation costs, substantially improve regional connectivity across the country, and expand economic opportunities for citizens nationwide. Additionally, they anticipate that the project will be a catalyst for job creation, strengthen agricultural value chains by facilitating easier movement of goods, and promote national unity through enhanced accessibility. The railway restoration is expected to significantly bolster Sierra Leone's national transportation infrastructure, thereby enhancing regional trade and improving access to essential services for its citizens. Ultimately, this full project is designed to contribute meaningfully to the country’s long-term economic transformation and sustainable development.
