Sierra Leonean Students Depart for Hungary on Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarships

Twenty-six Sierra Leonean students were awarded scholarships under the 2026/2027 Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, enabling them to pursue higher education in Hungary. These scholarships will allow the beneficiaries to pursue undergraduate, Master's, and Doctoral programmes at various universities across Hungary, marking a significant step in their academic journeys. The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) organized a pre-departure engagement for the scholarship recipients, a key event designed to prepare them for their impending travel. This full session provided essential information and guidance, ensuring the students were well-equipped before their departure to Europe. The scholarships represent a profound opportunity for these students to study abroad, immersing themselves in diverse academic environments and gaining specialized knowledge in their chosen fields.

Scholarship Selection Process

The selection process for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme was highly competitive, attracting a substantial number of applicants from across Sierra Leone. More than 1,000 Sierra Leoneans initially applied for the prestigious scholarship programme, demonstrating the strong desire among the nation's youth for international educational opportunities. From this extensive pool of candidates, approximately 300 applicants were subsequently shortlisted for further consideration, undergoing a thorough review of their academic qualifications and aspirations. The rigorous selection process, which involved multiple stages of evaluation, culminated in the nomination of 75 applicants for the scholarship. These nominations represented the final stage of the in-country selection process, following which the Hungarian government made its ultimate decisions. Ultimately, 26 applicants successfully secured the awards, noting the stringent criteria and the high caliber of the selected students. The competitive nature of the programme reflects not only the high interest among Sierra Leonean students but also the significant value placed on pursuing international higher education opportunities in Hungary.

Expanding Educational Ties

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme has already established a strong presence in Sierra Leone, with approximately 91 Sierra Leoneans currently studying in Hungary under its auspices. This number is projected to increase significantly to approximately 117 once the latest group of 26 beneficiaries commences their studies, further solidifying the educational bridge between the two nations. Sierra Leone's continued participation in the programme is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the country's human-resource capacity by fostering a new generation of skilled professionals. Beyond individual academic achievements, this initiative also aims to deepen educational cooperation between Sierra Leone and Hungary, promoting mutual understanding and collaboration. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is actively collaborating with Sierra Leone’s diplomatic mission in Berlin to provide full support for the students throughout their time in Hungary, ensuring their welfare and academic success. This collaborative effort shows the commitment of the Sierra Leonean government to its citizens pursuing education abroad.
