Sierra Leone Water Delegation Visits Uganda for Operational Benchmarking

A delegation from the Guma Valley Water Company arrived in Uganda to conduct an operational benchmarking tour with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. Managing Director Mariwan Kallon leads the team from Freetown during this visit to Kampala.

Officials designed the program to facilitate knowledge exchange regarding water production and distribution systems. The delegation is also examining infrastructure management practices, revenue collection strategies, and customer care protocols implemented by the host utility. By evaluating these technical and administrative processes, the Sierra Leone representatives aim to assess operational improvements for their home facilities. The visit continues as both organizations compare institutional frameworks to enhance service delivery.

Focus On Operational Efficiency

Members of the Guma Valley Water Company delegation are examining specific methods utilized by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to lower non-revenue water levels. These technical investigations center on the implementation of advanced leak detection programs throughout the utility's network. Engineers from the Sierra Leone team are also reviewing standardized meter management protocols currently in place within the Ugandan system. By observing these maintenance practices, the visitors intend to identify procedural gaps and potential improvements for their own infrastructure. The assessment covers both physical pipe monitoring and administrative tracking of water volumes across the distribution grid. These efforts form the core of the delegation’s focus on increasing overall utility efficiency and reducing resource losses.

Technical Training And Management

Training sessions for the Guma Valley Water Company delegation cover asset management, geographical information systems, and wastewater treatment methods. Experts from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation provide these instructional modules to assist the visiting team in modernizing their internal processes. These sessions focus on the technical integration of mapping data and the systematic oversight of utility infrastructure.

Participants are also analyzing organizational structures as they prepare to return to Sierra Leone. Water supply and sewerage services currently operate under the control of separate entities within Sierra Leone. Managing Director Mariwan Kallon and his team are evaluating the benefits of the integrated service model employed by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Uganda to determine potential structural shifts for their home operations.

The delegation will attend an NWSC Baraza to observe staff and management engagement practices. This forum allows the Sierra Leone representatives to witness how the host utility maintains transparency and communication between its leadership and the workforce. By participating in this session, the visitors gain direct insight into the consultative approaches used by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to align employee performance with organizational goals. These activities conclude the formal benchmarking tour in Kampala, providing the Guma Valley Water Company with a full overview of both the technical and human resources strategies required for effective utility management.
